2017 GMC Yukon XL

Project Overview

This 2017 GMC Yukon came in with a tapping noise and check engine light, symptoms of a failed DOD lifter and bent pushrod—a common issue on these engines once they’re out of warranty. Rather than simply replacing the faulty parts, KTR took a smarter approach, turning a costly repair into a lasting performance upgrade.

Engine Repair & Performance Upgrade

We disassembled the L83 engine and replaced the camshaft, lifters, valve springs, and pushrods with a BTR Racing DOD-delete package, effectively removing the problem-prone Displacement on Demand system. The upgrade not only prevents future lifter failure but also adds power and throttle response across the rev range.

To complement the new setup, we installed an S&B cold air intake for improved airflow and finished things off with a fresh set of brakes before returning the vehicle to the customer. The result: more power, better reliability, and a lower total cost than a factory-style repair that would’ve likely failed again.
